Valentine's Crochet Fundraiser

Posted by Community Learning Partnership On 05:09 0 comments

Learn how to crochet hearts!

Would you like to have a fun evening, doing what you love best, and also raise funds for our charity?

This Wednesday, 10th February we will be celebrating Valentine's early - leaving the 14th free to spend with your loved one!  Well, we couldn't possibly make you choose between crochet and your partner - that wouldn't be fair (hee hee).

For just £10.00, we'll provide you with patterns, yarn and nibbles and all proceeds will go towards supporting CLP's running costs.

We'll be meeting in our very own Heavenly Arts and Crafts Cafe, which is near Watford, from 7 pm - 9.30 pm.

We have a good-sized group coming along already, but we would love as many hookers as possible to join us for an evening of crochet l-u-r-v-e!

Laughing Hens

Our fundraiser is being supported by Laughing Hens, who supply The Heavenly Arts and Crafts Cafe with Rooster and Manos del Uruguay yarns.  They are going to be donating the yarn for us, and I can't wait to see what is inside our parcel!

This generous support by Laughing Hens means that we're able to reduce our expenditure so even more of your workshop fee will benefit our charity, which in turns means we can reach more learners. Thanks so much to Pete and all of his friendly team at Croft Stables, up in Cheshire.

Why not let love blossom, and visit the Laughing Hens website:
Trust me, there is so much yarn to gaze at and adore that you will be completely smitten.  You can also follow them on Facebook here:  Laughing Hens - FaceBook

How to book

Just contact me if you need more info or want to book your place:

M: 07771 99 28 95

Can't come?

Perhaps you would consider showing your love for CLP by making a Valentine's donation. This could be a one-off amount or a small monthly sum.  Any support you're able to give would be warmly welcomed.  You'll find the donate now button at the top right of this page.

Thanks for all of your support and encouragement.  Each and every one of you, and all that you do to support CLP with its work in some of the most disadvantaged communities in Hertfordshire, is appreciated.  Nothing you do to support our charity and one another goes unnoticed by us.  Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Crochet with the Heavenly Hookers

Posted by Community Learning Partnership On 16:02 0 comments

Borehamwood Families Day

Hi, my name is Elizabeth and I am one of the luckiest people in Hertfordshire as I run a fab charity called Community Learning Partnership (CLP), and get to work with lots of amazing people.  If you're reading this, you have probably met me or some of our lovely volunteers at Borehamwood's Families Day, or you've followed a link.

Heavenly Hookers

The Heavenly Hookers is a cheeky little name I gave to all of our crochet learners!!  Just to make it absolutely clear, a CLP Hooker is someone who loves to crochet lol.  And Heavenly because, once you learn to crochet, it's like finding a little bit of heaven on earth.  Think relaxation, chilling, colour therapy, creativity, unwinding ........ ah, that's feeling better already, isn't it? :-)

Crochet courses

CLP runs crochet courses at absolute beginner, refresher and intermediate level, and they are taught by qualified, experienced and friendly tutors.  These courses are usually very heavily subsidised by grant funding.  Typically, we offer a 4-week course, made up of 4 x 2.5 hour sessions, at £10 - £20.00.  If you had to pay full price, the cost would be approximately £150.00!!

Beginner courses

You will learn the chain, double, treble and slip stitches - the foundation skills of all crochet.  Most people who attend each of the four sessions, and practice inbetween, will be able to crochet by the end of the course.  They will be able to make projects like granny squares, which can be joined together to make cushions, baby blankets and throws.  You will be able to join our online Heavenly Hooker FaceBook group, where you will receive ongoing support from your tutor and from one another.  We also post free video tutorials and patterns to help and inspire you.

Intermediate courses

Intermediates already have a grasp of the basics, so we move on to more advanced stuff such as using stitches to make more complicated patterns as well as learning how to actually read a pattern.  You will quickly find yourself making blankets, mandalas and bags that will make people gasp with disbelief that YOU are able to create something so amazing!!  Again, most of these courses are subsidised with grant funding in the Borehamwood and South Oxhey areas.

Heavenly Hooker groups

Health warning:  once you learn to crochet, it can become addictive!  So many of our hookers wanted to continue meeting up after their courses finished, we created weekly meet-ups.  If you can already crochet, you would be made to feel very welcome at these fun and friendly sessions:

Borehamwood Heavenly Hookers meet on Sunday mornings from 10 am - 12.30 pm, usually in Mirzan Cafe in Aycliffe Road.  The cost is currently free, but you buy your own refreshments.

South Oxhey Heavenly Hookers meet on Wednesday evenings from 7 pm - 9.30 pm in our very own Heavenly Arts and Crafts Cafe in Muirfield Road WD19 6JD.  The cost is just £2.00 per week, payable only on the weeks you join us.

What the Heavenly Hookers say about their new skills

'Learning to crochet was probably the single best thing I have ever done. The course was well run, friendly and, most importantly, welcoming.'  Clare Eastwood, South Oxhey

'I have thoroughly enjoyed learning a new skill, meeting new people and enjoying the company of like minded people.'  Nicki Sparkles, Borehamwood

Yarns and Hooks

We also stock Stylecraft and Rooster yarns, Inside Crochet and Simply Crochet magazines, and hooks, books and other crochet paraphenalia.  We don't go in for lots of sales, offers, buy 2 get one free or any other snazzy-type advertising  tricks and spins.....we just keep our prices as low as we can - all of the time.  The very small profit we make is ploughed back into CLP to support us with our running costs.

Pamper Evening

Posted by Community Learning Partnership On 02:08 0 comments

Mind the funding gap!

Our community learning champion volunteers, aka the CLP Angels, are not going to let government cut-backs stop us in our tracks! The reduced funding we will receive from the Skills Funding Agency has prompted them to develop community fundraising right here in South Oxhey.

Pamper Evening, 8th July

On Friday, 8th July 2011 from 7.00 pm - 10.00 pm the CLP Angels are hosting a pamper evening for women in the Labour Club, Henbury Way. The entrance charge is only £2.50, and small charges will be made for mini treatments. There will be threading, henna tattoos, nail art, massage, Virgin Vie, Avon, hair curling and lots, lots more. Angels have made bag jewels to sell, and our budding baking entrepeneur will have delicious cupcakes on sale.

We hope that this will be the first of many initiatives to address the funding gap, and that Transition Funding we have received will help us to identify further opportunities to diversify our income streams.

Big Society Model

In fact, we're developing a Big Society model of serving the needs of our local communities, and engaging with volunteers to help us to continue to deliver adult and family learning projects in the most disadvantaged areas of Hertfordshire. Not only that, but the CLP Angels are also using and developing skills that will boost confidence and self-esteem, preparing them for further learning and employment.

So, if you're free and female on the evening of 8th July, you're very welcome to join us for an evening of pampering and well-being. Not only will you benefit by recharing your batteries, you also know that funds raised will enable us to continue our important and rewarding work.
